I've been a WordPerfect user since 5.1. Because my secretary and the other people with whom I exchange documents are hooked on Word, I reluctantly use it for basic word processing.
But WordPerfect is my One True Love. Its word processor is so powerful and versatile that you can do more-than-basic desktop publishing without needing another program like Publisher. In fact, I find WordPerfect easier to use than Publisher OR Word.
WordPerfect makes mid-document format changes a breeze. Want to turn off a header? Two clicks and you're there. Want to format a single line with some text aligned with the left margin, some in the center, and some aligned with the right margin? You can do that with three mouse clicks or keyboard commmands. You can't do it automatically at all in Word.
Best of all, though, is Reveal Codes. In WordPerfect, you always know where your formatting codes are. Every single one of them. You know when they started and when they end. Did your document go crazy all of a sudden, reformatting itself in a way you don't think you can get out of? In WordPerfect, you can hunt through the Reveal Codes section at the bottom of your screen and find exactly what's going wrong where.
Need to publish something in booklet format? All you need to do is check "print as booklet" and WordPerfect will automatically arrange your pages in the right order to become a booklet. No cut and paste needed.
If I never had to use Word again, I'd be a happy camper.
