Workgroup edition is an entry-level version of sql server 2005. I've used it successfully in our small departments, and for when I didn't need BI. For heavy lifting, you'll need a higher, more full-featured version. For BI (analysis services, reporting services, notification services, transformation services) you'll need at least standard.
